This proposal is to design and develop a geospatial Internet of Things (IoT) real-time data processing platform, that is interoperable and secure. The proposed geospatial IoT platform aims to empower any organizations, such as government, industry and even citizens, to innovate with IoT technologies effortlessly with open standards. The IoT has been recognized as the next evolution of the Internet. The basic concept of the IoT is that everyday objects can sense the environment, can communicate and cooperate with each other, and their capabilities can be accessed by multiple applications via the Internet. By giving objects the ability to sense their surroundings and to interact with each other, the IoT is unleashing exciting possibilities for a variety of application domains. However, in order to achieve the IoT vision, many technical barriers still remain to be solved. In this proposal, we propose to address three open problems: (1) the IoT heterogeneity in tasking and event processing; (2) the IoT security vulnerabilities; (3) the technical gap to process the vast amount of IoT spatio-temporal data streams in real-time. First, we will use an interoperable standard-based approach to address the IoT heterogeneity issues. The outcomes will be the Part II and Part III of OGC SensorThings API standard for tasking and event processing. Secondly we will design and implement a blockchain-based architecture for the SensorThings API that will deliver lightweight interoperability and decentralized security. The expected outcome will be a decentralized security infrastructure that can securely authenticate and authorize the accesses to IoT sensing and tasking. Finally we will develop a new real-time IoT data processing architecture that is based on the three-layered Lambda architecture and designed specifically to handle spatio-temporal data streams. In summary, the final result of this proposed research will be the necessary algorithms, architectures, and software components in order to build a complete IoT real-time data processing platform that is interoperable and secure.This proposed research will have a significant impact because it represents the enabling technologies to unleash the full potential of IoT. The proposed SensorThings tasking and event processing standards, the blockchain-based security framework and the real-time IoT data processing system aim to connect heterogeneous IoT devices and allow them to interoperate in a secure and real-time fashion. Once accepted as OGC standards, they have the potential to be used by millions to billions of IoT devices and many applications. In summary, this sensor web research will bestow significant economic, technological, and social benefits on Canada. It has a strong technology pull, provides innovative approaches, and the end results have the potential to be used by many IoT devices and be applied to a very wide range of applications.
