项目摘要

The objective of this project is to study the interoperability between the Common Database (CDB) specification and the Open Geospatial specifications. The long-term objective is to develop a new international open standard for a common terrain database that is useful for both run-time synthetic environment generation and terrain database repositories for modeling and simulation. Modern simulations used for individual, crew, and collective training and mission rehearsal are increasingly networked together to compose rich federations of virtual and constructive simulations. The modeling and simulation end-user community increasingly requires "plug and play" synthetic environment database re-use and a common synthetic environment local representation to enhance realism and "fair fight" concepts in military simulation. The Common DataBase (CDB) Specification is an ad-hoc industry standard maintained by CAE Inc. Although it is widely adopted and implemented, it is not an open standard. While CDB is proven useful, user communities demand consensus-based open standards from recognized Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), such as the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The outcomes of the project will contribute to a new OGC standard that will be integrated into CAE Inc's simulation software and ultimately meet their customers' demand for open standards. This new standard specification will make CAE Inc's technologies more competitive and effective because it will enhance the realism and efficiency in dynamic M&S applications, and enable the vision of "plug-and-play" synthetic environment database that can be shared, reused, and repurposed.
