A radical transformation is required in the world's energy systems to mitigate climate change and meet Canada's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. The Canadian transport sector was identified as the second largest source of GHG emissions, accounting for 25% of the nations total emissions. It is imperative to focus research towards enabling the transition of the transportation sector towards a hydrogen-based system. SurePoint Technologies is collaborating with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology's (SAIT) Centre for Energy Research and Clean Unconventional Technologies (CERCUTS) research group to develop a proprietary prototype to test hydrogen and natural gas fuel blends at varying ratios to optimize performance and reduce tailpipe emissions. The proposed research will hybridize the existing design of the internal combustion engine (ICE) in vehicles to accommodate a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas. The modification of existing ICEs will allow for an easier implementation of technology in existing vehicles without requiring a substantial investment in engine overhaul, while still achieving a notable reduction in tailpipe emissions. The developed technology will spur investments and strategic partnerships across the country and beyond Canada's borders in the mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Building a strong hydrogen economy will lead to financial, environmental and health benefits for all Canadians.
