Spread across three campuses, St. Lawrence College supports the training and development of the most significant footprint of any Canadian College. This Eastern Ontario footprint is home to 16,861 companies, representing $25.5B of income in 2020. By 2040, Eastern Ontario's population is projected to rise by 23.2 percent to 2.22 million, with all major age groups projected to grow. Like other Canadian regions, Eastern Ontario has been shifting to advance manufacturing and logistics to stay competitive and on the cutting-edge using advanced technology. However, the resources to support this transition have been more urban-centric than rural-focused. Many companies face technical and business model challenges in embracing this shift. Overcoming these challenges is the focus of The Rapid Engineering Group for Research in Eastern Ontario (REGReO). NSERC investment will establish the REGReO as a leading-edge, applied research and industry interaction facility to support rapid industry innovation. The REGReO will assist the eastern highway 401 corridor's manufacturing, production, and technology sector SMEs to adopt new approaches to design, develop and improve the engineering and engineering processes employed by these companies in order to achieve engineering advancement and product and manufacturing improvement. SLC faculty and student expertise in Energy Systems Technology, Instrumentation and Controls Technology, Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology, Civil Engineering Technology and Canada's Only Wind Turbine Technician program will catalyze innovation in SME partners. The REGReO research vision aligns with critical stages of the engineering process that are essential to fostering innovation and outputs that lead to successful commercialization. St. Lawrence College students will develop service and product development and design skills, laboratory experimentation, field research, project management, communications, ethics, entrepreneurship, leadership, and teamwork by participating in research projects. Although St. Lawrence College has successfully supported projects in this area, NSERC's support of the REGReO represents an opportunity to increase the group's engagement with regional industry partners.
