英文摘要
This NSERC CREATE Industrial stream program will provide unique, industry-informed interdisciplinary training for Sensory-Motor Adaptive Rehabilitation Technology (SMART). SMART combines rehabilitation devices (robotics, exoskeletons, assistive devices) with innovative approaches (artificial intelligence and machine learning, biomimetic materials, wearable sensors, virtual reality, behavioral assessment). The resulting next-generation products interact intelligently with humans to support and improve their quality of life. The core components of the SMART CREATE training program are: (a) workshops on Foundational topics, Knowledge, Skills and Entrepreneurship that bring trainees together to learn in a cooperative cohort; (b) personalized mentorships that align students with matched mentors for career, professional and personal development; and (c) industrial internship placements where trainees will gain and apply SMART-related skills within industry settings. Foundational topics include Equity, Diversion & Inclusion (EDI), leadership, science communication and technology uptake, and are integrated throughout the training program.SMART CREATE graduates will uniquely understand the impact of human form and function on design, development and deployment of technology. They will be able to apply principles of EDI through the research and product development cycle. They will be well equipped to work collaboratively and lead teams to achieve design goals. Finally, they will be experienced in assessing the impact of technology integration on the end user. From SMART CREATE, trainees will be ready to seamlessly transition to industry or entrepreneurship with the integrated training in foundational and professional skills that are woven into the program. SMART CREATE training will be inherently interdisciplinary and directly informed by industry needs. Trainees will build practical knowledge that is essential for success in a rapidly adapting, team-based technological environment and in an inclusive society.
