The global HEP community is facing daunting computing and storage challenges. Facilities such as the high luminosity (HL) LHC and the high-intensity B-factory will provide unprecedented amounts of data. Even with the most optimistic predictions for the evolution of the computing technology, the computing requirements will far exceed the projected resources. It has become clear to the community that HEP needs to rationalize it's computing, and take advantage of the developments occurring in the industry. Two of the key areas are cloud computing and the management of research data. The research computing group at the University of Victoria has been focused on solutions for future HEP computing. We have been working on distributed data management, cloud computing, and high-speed networks for many years. In 2016, we were funded with one of seven CFI Cyberinfrastructure awards in Canada to a distributed cloud computing and research data storage system. The group is making important contributions to the global effort. We have a unique cloud computing system that is providing significant resources to both ATLAS and Belle II. We collaborate with CERN-IT and TRIUMF on distributed data management system. The goal of this proposal is to continue our research into emerging technologies for data management for compute clouds and other computing systems. These areas are critical to the success of the HL-LHC and the Belle II experiments. This proposal will enable our group to make further contributions to this critical, yet novel area of research. The project is an excellent training area for highly qualified personnel; the group has trained over 60 students and staff. Further, our work has received significant attention from industry; we have received support from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and other companies over the past few years.
