This grant request is for the continued salary support of a highly skilled individual based at the University of Victoria who is an essential resource for subatomic physics and accelerator physics projects in Canada. The previous grant supported Paul Poffenberger until December 2017 and his replacement, Sam de Jong since September 2017. Both are detector technologists who have made and are making crucial contributions to flagship Canadian subatomic and accelerator physics projects, and his expertise is needed to maintain existing detector systems and to help develop new systems, in collaboration with subatomic physicists across Canada. Research programs that have benefited from this support include ALPHA, ARIEL, ATLAS, Belle II, T2K, and the International Linear Collider. The MRS at UVic leverages resource investments from TRIUMF as part of the Victoria Subatomic Physics and Accelerator Research Centre (VISPA). The resource is overseen by a prioritization board, in common with the SAP MRS resources at Carleton University. Previously, the resources included Queens University but their MRS grant was not renewed in 2018. The board facilitates access to the MRS facilities by reviewing new requests for their use. Should the resources become oversubscribed, the board would rank the requests based on standard NSERC criteria. The MRS managers at the institutes would use this ranking to assign manpower as it becomes available as on-going tasks are completed. The Board meets several times a year and is given information about the progress and status of on-going work undertaken by the MRS employees.
