The project aims to carry out a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study of the radiation formed in an electron-based crystalline undulator. Although only a positron-based crystalline undulator was considered to be a feasible device so far, it was recently shown that also planar channeling of ultra-relativistic electrons in a periodically bent crystal is suitable for generating of powerful radiation with a narrow spectral distribution in the hard x-ray and gamma-ray range. The analysis will be carried out over wide range of electron energies (from tens of MeV up to tens of GeV), for various crystals and planes, and for various shapes of the periodically bent channels. A special attention will be paid to the energy range below 1 GeV were quantum dynamics of channeling electrons becomes important. We are planning to work in close collaboration with the group from Mainz University who will carry out experimental investigation of the phenomenon within the framework of the project submitted to DFG simultaneously with the current proposal. We expect that the development of a solid and rigorous theory of the electron-based undulator will clearly demonstrate the feasibility of this device and will stimulate further experimental and technologicalactivity.
