Our latest findings suggest an optimization of axonal and synaptic transmission properties to the specific demands of input timing in sound localization circuits. Based on these insights, we will address the following questions in the next funding period: 1) What are the developmental mechanisms underlying anatomical specializations for tuning action potential velocity? 2) Is there a structural basis for constant synaptic delays in calyces of Held? 3) What is the role of relative and absolute timing of inhibition for sound localization in complex listening contexts? These questions will be investigated with histological and electrophysiological methods as well as cell culture.
