OpreaDMS-0854518 The project is dedicated to the organization of aninterdisciplinary Workshop on Mathematical Modeling and ComputerSimulations for Soft Materials, to bring together scientists fromdifferent fields, ranging from applied and computationalmathematics and applied physics to a variety of disciplinesrelevant to soft matter physics, unified by their common interestin search for a deeper understanding of soft materials. Theworkshop is conceived specifically to identify new challenges fortheory, modeling and simulation of soft materials, and toinvestigate the growing role of applied and computationalmathematics in meeting those challenges. The goal of theworkshop is to attract researchers at all levels, from graduatestudents and junior researchers to leaders in the field, withfocus on breadth and diversity of the participants. Particularemphasis is placed on the training of young participants. Theresults are disseminated in a format useful to students, scientists and engineers, through graduate courses withinterdisciplinary audience at Colorado State University, andthrough the publication of a refereed Collected Lectures volumeof the invited and contributed talks. From blood and lipid complexes, detergents, paints, plastics, personal care products, to liquid crystals andbio-materials, we are made of and surrounded by soft matter inall aspects of our lives. While many properties of hard matterare now understood, we are still on the learning curve with softmatter, and the study of the salient features and complexbehavior of soft materials is one of the 21st century'schallenges, requiring the development of new tools, newunderstanding, and an unprecedented level of interdisciplinarycollaboration. Progress in materials science achieved in thelast decades, as well as the rapid development of computertechnology, have brought scientists to a better understanding ofsoft matter behavior and phenomena. Although much progress inthis area has been made in recent years, fundamental challengesremain, such as the development of a unified scientific approachto soft materials, and the conversion of the important scientificdiscoveries into useful technological solutions. The workshopbrings together experts in mathematics, physics and engineeringto explore and develop the potential in this richinterdisciplinary area, and generates a diverse,cross-disciplinary, but highly cooperative research environmentthat increases the accessibility of this interdisciplinary fieldto both students entering the field and non-specialists. Theworkshop presents a broad spectrum of current research andprospects for future directions that provides young researcherswith an intensive learning experience and a larger perspectivebeyond their individual PhD thesis topics.
