Itazuke Style Globular Earthenware: A Microregional Comparative Study on Northern Kyushu Yayoi Pottery Trends

The major goal of this study is to elucidate the regional, small area, site and individual variability in the production of material culture during the transitional period between the Jomon and Yayoi periods in the Japanese archipelago. Thus far, results utilizing geometric morphometric statistics and 3D morphometric mapping computer utilities shows that the northern Kyushu region of first contact with migrant populations slowly reduced variability in pottery form not necessarily due to elite control, but likely due to increases in population density in major plains regions. Despite this, through the use of novel 3D methodology, results mirror that of modern ethnographic studies which show that even within standardized production contexts, individual variance is visible on pottery shape.This study sheds light on previously unrecognized variability in material culture production in archaeological materials, which can be accurately reproduced utilizing statistical methods. This study also reinforces the importance of rates of production and population density on degrees of standardization of material culture in both modern and ancient society.
