A Historical Study of the Relationship between Sapporo Agricultural College and the Ainu Ethnology.

In this study, the investigator obtained the results on the role of Sapporo Agricultural College for the formation of Ainu ethnology, as follows.1. Sapporo Agricultural College provided a good ground to form the Ainu ethnology, as the graduate of that was very interested in Ainu, although they actually contributed a few Ainu materials to the museum.2. In Sapporo Agricultural College, there was a trend to discuss actively about the ethnology and the development of modern nation, under the popularity of the theory of evolution, in spite of the fact that W. S. Clark, the first president of that college, preached Christian doctrines. It is assumed that the image of Ainu as "primitive people", that many people had, was formed under the theory of evolution.3. Dr. Saburou Hatta, zoologist and a pioneer of Ainu ethnology, had an intention of studying the anthlopology and the ethnology on the basis of the theory of evolution, on his zoological writings. It is presumed that he was influenced by Dr. Kakichi Mitsukuri, zoologist, professor of Imperial University, and Hatta's teacher, that was also greatly influenced by the theory of evolution, that H. Spencer and E. S. Morse advanced.4. Therfore the investigator emphasizes that Sapporo Agricultural College had an important role for the formation of Ainu ethnology under the popularity of the theory of evolution and the topics about Ainu, in the Meiji period. In addition, Dr. Hatta's arrival to that college was another important factor of that.
