Reception of the Plaster Sculpture in Modern Japan

本研究考察了18世纪欧洲至当代日本石膏雕塑的接受史，并参照东亚国家和美国的石膏雕塑接受史，阐明了古典观念和艺术教育方法在日本的传播和转化。人们注意到，在日本，石膏雕塑的肖像身份和绘画风格变得模糊和武断，因为那里的石膏雕塑只用作绘画的对象。这是对规范古典主义的一种偏离，但应该作为东亚文化接受的一个共同过程来历史地评价。

Examining the reception history of plaster sculpture from the 18th century Europe to contemporary Japan, and referring those of East Asian countries and the United States, this research clarified the diffusion and the transformation of the concept of the classic and the method of art education in Japan. It was noticed that the iconographical identity of plaster sculptures and the drawing style of them became obscure and arbitrary in Japan because the plaster sculptures were exclusively used there as the objects for drawing. This is a deviation from normative classicism, but should be evaluated historically as a common process of cultural reception in East Asia.
