A Sociological Study of the Formaton of "National" Culture in Singapore

新加坡自1965年独立以来，只有不到50年的历史，自殖民时代以来，在多种族制度下，新加坡被华裔、马来人、印度人和其他人四个种族瓜分。在这样的条件下，民族文化发展起来有些困难，有没有可能发展起来呢？在这项研究中，我敢于使用“民族”文化这一术语，通过民族与国家的互动来审视和揭示它的发展过程。为此，我在那里进行了田野调查，考察了以下五个主题：(1)大多数新加坡人必须住在政府建造的公寓里的社会的形成和居住文化。(2)小贩中心特色饮食场所的形成及其改造和拆除。(3)国家古迹的形成和拆除。(4)新加坡特色语言的发展与压制。(5)新加坡华人与华人的关系。

Singapore has less than fifty years of history since its independence in 1965 and has been divided by four races of Chinese/Malay/Indian/Others under Multiracialism since the colonial era. Under such conditions where national culture has some difficulty to develop, is it possible to grow it up? In this study, I dare to use the term of "national" culture and examine and reveal the processes of its development through the interaction between nation and state.For this purpose, I have conducted field research there and examined the five topics as follows: (1)Formation of the society where most of all Singaporeans must live in the flats built by the government and the habitat culture to live there. (2)Formation of the distinctive eating places of Hawker Centres and their reformation and demolition. (3)Formation of national monuments and their demolition. (4)Development and suppression of the distinctive languages in Singapore. (5)Relations between Chinese Singaporean and Chinese National.
