PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT In response to PA-20-272 (NOT-OD-20-054), this request is submitted for an administrative supplement to the mentored career development award, K01HL148503 funded through the National Heart, Lung, And Blood Institute of the NIH. The proposed supplement falls within the scope of the parent grant, which focuses on addressing current gaps in the literature regarding the understanding of high blood pressure due to sarcopenia and provides new evidence for the discernable relationship between low muscle strength and blood pressure in sarcopenia, and effective non-pharmaceutical treatment approaches. Due to her critical life event, Dr. Laddu is at a critical juncture where time constraints and limited staff to support training and research responsibilities have led to critical gaps in career development and research productivity. The objectives of the supplement are to ensure the continuity of Dr. Laddu’s career development and research training and facilitate transition to research independence, following her critical life event. This application describes the negative implications of Dr. Laddu’s critical life event on her career development and research productivity. This application further outlines Dr. Laddu’s request for additional resources that will be necessary to address gaps in productivity occurring as a direct consequence of her critical life event, and sufficient to facilitate Dr. Laddu’s return to full research productivity by the end of the supplement period. The specific request for supplemental research support is twofold (1) to hire additional personnel to oversee the methodological delivery of day-to-day operations of the study including coordinating study protocol activities and ensuring quality of data collection; (2) to support additional biostatistical services needed to assist with data analyses and manuscript preparation related to Aim 1 and Aim 2 of the parent grant. With support from this Program, Dr. Laddu will be well positioned to fulfill gaps in productivity that occurred as a negative consequence of the critical life event and resume to full research productivity by the end of the supplemental period. Ensuring continuity of research will further support Dr. Laddu’s project milestones and long-term goals of developing more definitely powered R-level applications to evaluate efficacy of the intervention and potential therapeutic mechanisms by which resistance exercise impacts vascular health in older adults with varying debilitating conditions. Importantly, this supplement program will support Dr. Laddu’s efforts to engage in career development and research activities that are critical to increasing her research productivity and scholarly visibility, and for preserving her progress towards research independence as an expert trialist in health promotion and chronic disease prevention in older adult populations.
