Whom may I say is speaking? The cognitive neuropsychology of our thoughts, and what makes them our own.

This project aims to better understand the experience of thinking to ourselves in words (inner speech) and how our brains distinguish between this experience and the words others speak to us (external speech). Inner speech is central to our ability to regulate our behaviour and to be self-aware, yet is poorly understood. Furthermore, a breakdown in the ability to distinguish inner speech from external speech underpins the devastating experience of hearing hallucinated voices. This project will address these problems through a novel combination of neuroimaging and neurostimulation techniques. The outcomes will be an improved understanding of these phenomena and information key to the development of new treatments for mental health difficulties.
