The aim of this project is to expand knowledge of the current and future alternative fuels market, and in doing so steer the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) future energy storage technology roadmap. A growing market is developing for sustainable fuels, and as the need grows to find replacements for fossil based products, new processes and products are being developed. The objective of the project is therefore to align long-term future propulsion technologies with ideal energy supply pathways, and to provide intelligence required to identify and dismiss unsustainable or inefficient ones.Biofuel use is now widespread in both pure and dilute form, and the growth of this industry has demonstrated some of the pitfalls such as scalability, water use, and negative impact on the food chain. The goals for any potential future fuels are complex, and must satisfy multiple technical, economic, environmental and social criteria. This project will analyse current and future biological and synthetic processes, and evaluate the end candidates and their processes from perspectives of fundamental fuel quality, global warming potential and other standard recognised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) categories, and thus a representation of the overall environmental responsibility. It will deliver a ranking of products and processes, with supporting subjective evaluation. The project will break down into the following objectives:- Develop a catalogue of fuels and processes, summarising key criteria for each.- Undertake streamlined attributional LCA on an agreed number of these fuels and processes.- Using the LCA data identify key feed-stocks and pathways that support sustainable future products.- Study the more promising processes or groups of processes identified during the previous phase, focusing on fuller LCA and end use scenarios.- Review a selection of processes and how geographical location on a national and international scale can affect overall sustainability performance and cost trade-off.- Create relevant data that can be used in various JLR models to predict the LCA impact of different worldwide bio, synthetic and conventional fuel use scenarios.- Undertake consequential LCA of the wider impact of the most promising options.- Understand the suitability of selected candidates for prescribed automotive end use scenarios such as Internal Combustion Engine, Turbine, Reformers and Fuel Cells use.
