Berlin: British Cold War City, 1945-1994

This project proposes to study the socio-cultural impacts of American bases in Britain duringthe Cold War. While the Cold War had many cultural impacts, the literature on'Americanisation' tends to focus on material culture or subsumes nuances of culturalchange within studies of 'popular culture'. My proposal, by contrast, analyses how theinteractions between American bases and local British communities had tangible impacts,affecting British attitudes, and life more widely, aiding understanding of how the Cold Warwas experienced socio-culturally and politically in Britain.
