Timelines of Hate: Hindutva Violence in the Social Media Age

My doctoral research will study the relationship between militant Hinduism and social media. It aims to locate the role of social media services in India's changing politics and economy, trace their use among hate groups for violence and the resistance to this mobilisation by members and non-members. Exploring the role of Facebook and Whatsapp in 'world's largest democracy,' the project aims to both identify and build theories that effectively reflect the developing worlds, where histories, politics, and sensibilities do not particularly match democracies in the global North that inform our popular understanding and research of the internet.
