This research will investigate Louis Jouvet's acting work in cinema. Hisperformances resulted in a unique system of artificial acting in which the bodiesof the actor and the character exist 'side by side', allowing the audience tosimultaneously engage with the characters embodied and witness the mastery ofvoice and corporeal gestures of the actor. We will explore how this artificialitytheatricalizes cinematic space and criticizes conservative values. We will analysehow Jouvet's acting theory and methods intersect with cinematic conceptions ofmise en scene, calling into question the dominant aesthetics and representationsof realist and naturalist film.
