The Contingency of the Transcendental: Lacan as a Reader of Kant

My research assesses the role of Kant's philosophy within Lacan's endeavour to remodel the Freudian metapsychology of the psychoanalytic subject. I will argue that Kant's concept of the transcendental, in both its aesthetical and logical dimension, serves Lacan to think our imaginary-symbolic experience as conditioned by a space structured through what he calls "the cut of the signifier". The unconscious "outside" that coincides with our innermost subjectivity is to be understood as a consequence of language's immanent irruption into our material corporeality. In this way, Lacan thinks the transcendental by way of its emergence out of a contingently given nature.
