The Stucco and Tile mihrabs of Greater Iran (12th to 14th Centuries)

This project will examine a wide range of stucco and tile mihrabs, produced in Iran and neighboring territories during the Seljuq and Ilkhanid periods. The research will draw on a combination of studies of styles, artistic techniques, production technology, polychromy, and design principles. It will provide important insights into the identity, profession, and mobility of the artisans. A clearer understanding of the knowledge of production methods, copying practices of earlier styles, distribution of workshops, and how they migrated across the wider region via the mobility of craftsmen will emerge.
