From Playing Football to Gender Equality: Empowering Women in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro

The empowerment of women is essential for achieving gender equality. This research project will explore ways to achieve this empowerment by comparing the effect of imposing equality from above, through political equality, with building equality from below,in the form of women playing football. It will focus on the women in the Rocinha favela in Rio de Janeiro and the Villa 31 settlement in Buenos Aires, who are representative of the large segments of poor Brazilians and Argentinians. In particular, it willexplore how women achieving political equality, as expressed by representation and legislation, has an impact on the lives of the poorest women in society. This will be compared with how the characteristics that women develop playing football, can be taken off the pitch and empower them economically in their everyday lives.
