We have previously shown that cross-reactive sensing arrays are a potent tool in the study of complex mixtures, including blood, waste waters, and beverages such as whisky. Key to generating meaningful results from a cross reactive array, and a main area of focus in my group, is the development and design of sensor chemistry with a supramolecular understanding of the targets and receptors.(1) Having successfully developed arrays for biomolecules and beverages based on molecular and nanoparticulate sensor elements,(2,3) we now turn our attention to substrate-based sensors, more suited to instrumental design and point-of-need applications.(4) In collaboration with Biomedical Engineering (Clark) we will implement arrays with molecular designs for sensing liver disease in serum, and pollutants in waste waters, but transduced by surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) generated on lithographic nanostructures. Novel arrays of chemistries will be synthesised that target key biomarkers of liver disease, or key waste-water pollutants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, perfluorinated compounds), and methodology development will be undertaken to enable deposition on sensor substrates, using liquid handling tools, and measurement. This will form the basis for a ground-breaking high-throughput multi-region SPR tool for future studies.
