NUTRITIONAL PRIMARY PREVENTION OF TYPE I DIABETES IN CHILDREN

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This is a multinational, multicenter, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial to determine whether weaning to a casein hydrolysate formula during at least the first 6 months of life reduces the incidence of type 1 diabetes in genetically susceptible children. Newborn infants, who have an increased risk-associated HLA genotype and an affected first degree relative, will be randomly assigned to receive either a cow's mild-based formula (Enfamil) or a casein hydrolysate formula (Nutramigen) for the first 6-8 months of life. The mother's breast feeding wishes will not be interrupted. Subjects will be followed for 5 years (10 years if funding allows) for the presence of immunologic markers of islet cell autoimmunity and the development of diabetes and/or glucose intolerance.
