Translating the 'crimes' of Agustin Espinosa: murder and modernism at the margins

Agustin Espinosa (1897-1939), a major literary figure of the Canary Islands during the Second Spanish Republic, wrote the most extreme Spanish surrealist text, Crimen (1934). Espinosa is notably absent from studies of the so-called 'Generation of 1927' group and has been overlooked by English-language translators. This project will translate Crimen and Lancelot (1929) into English, conceptualising translation as a psychoanalytically aware process of creative rewriting and critical analysis focused on style. Utilising translation as a tool, it will interrogate Espinosa's relative marginalisation, contribute to the scarce scholarship in English, and establish new strategies for working with avant-garde texts in translation.
