Authorship and visual psychology of mammoth engravings from Magdalenian Gönnersdorf (Rhineland, Germany ~15,800 Before Present).

The 15,800-year-old Upper Palaeolithic (Magdalenian) campsite of Gönnersdorf (Rhineland, Germany) preserves remains of tents, outdoor activity areas and associated refuse left on the banks of the Rhine. Its collection of >500 well-provenanced slate plaquettes bearing engraved images of prey animals provides the largest European repository of such material. Some species depicted (e.g. horse) have been studied in detail: depictions of mammoths have not. I will study its 77 mammoth images using cutting edge traceological and visual psychological techniques, in order to identify individual engravers, idiosynchracies, and how cognitive processes such as pareidolia affected their engraving and the images they produced.
