Quantum materials are an exciting class of systems which display exotic phases of matter arising from unusual interactions which cannot be predicted by existing theories. By tuning these interactions via external parameters, exotic phases of matter can be stabilized and their different components can be explored. Furthermore, in controlling these systems, one could enhance a specific physical property which may be desirable in future applications. This project aims to explore experimentally emergent phases of quantum matter in novel materials in order to understand their fundamental interactions. The research will combine a series of experiments in extreme conditions of ultra-high magnetic fields, low temperatures and applied pressure using high-resolution transport and thermodynamic measurements. This study will explore systems with strong magnetic and electronic correlations such as metallic and geometrically frustrated magnetic lattices to understand how conduction electrons respond to frustrated interactions. Other systems will include those close to electronic instabilities and where their quantum limit can be reached in high-magnetic fields to stabilize new correlated electronic states of matter. The proposed projects will generate significant insight into the manipulation of electrons and spin degrees of freedom which is relevant for the development of future quantum electronics and computing.
