NATURAL PRODUCT SYNTHESIS AND CHEMICAL BIOLOGY OF NOVEL SKELETAL STRUCTURES

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The research interests of my laboratory are in the field of natural product synthesis and chemical biology. Specifically, synthesis of natural products with novel skeletal structures and intriguing biological properties is the focus of our research program. New synthetic tools, such as novel asymmetric organocatalysis and transition metal catalysis, will also be developed to advance current synthetic organic chemistry. These natural products and structurally sophisticated synthetic intermediates will be used to study their mode of action in cellular systems. The other focus of our research program is synthesis of large collections of natural product-like small molecules. High-throughput biological screening of these small molecule libraries will be carried out to identify compounds that can be used to study protein functions. The chemical biology information obtained from these two approaches will also be used to identify new drug targets and drug leads for various diseases.
