英文摘要
During the current project period, CCSG Developmental Funds were efficiently and productively used to recruit new researchers, establish a valuable new Shared Resource, fund a limited number of timely pilot projects, provide interim support to a promising investigator, and provide support for development of a novel method for the molecular diagnosis of cancer. Of the four new YCC faculty members recruited, three remain YCC members, and all are NCI-funded. One of the recruited faculty members currently serves as a Co-Leader of the Immunology & Immunotherapy Research Program. Another supported faculty recruit leads the Cancer Control component of the Prevention & Control Research Program (PCRP). A third has become a senior leader in the PCRP and Director of the widely used Tissue Analysis module of the Critical Technologies Tissue Services Shared Resource. The recipient of interim funding has received international recognition for her novel studies on dysregulation of ribosome biogenesis as a predisposing factor to a wide range of malignancies. She is now a YCC basic science leader, with multiple inter-programmatic collaborations. Funding for a highly innovative plan to define genome-wide methylation status has led to the development of a potentially powerful method for the molecular diagnosis of cancer. In the current application, YCC proposes a more focused use of the majority of the allotted Developmental Funds, to further develop eight recognized targeted areas of research excellence (TARE) and to establish four innovative Shared Resources required for the support of these TARE. The Scientific Steering Committee, YCC Director, Senior Leadership Team, and Research Program Leaders have identified these targeted areas, since they each involve groups of established research projects, emanating from multiple YCC Research Programs, and are linked by common research themes and core service usage. The goal is to facilitate and expedite the maturation of these synergistic interprogrammatic interactions into SPORE or program project peer-reviewed funding, anchored in the YCC. Since these research projects match clinical and basic scientists in on-going productive collaborations, they have excellent chances to evolve into successful translational applications and new clinical trials. Support is also requested to supplement institutional funding for four developing Shared Resources, required for conduct of the TARE projects and to support the expanding number of investigatorinitiated clinical trials.
