WEIGHTBEARING-LIMITED REHABILITATION WITH LOWER BODY POSITIVE PRESSURE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Investigate the efficacy of Lower Body Positive Pressure (LBPP) for rehabilitation following hip fracture surgery. This study follows earlier work demonstrating the safety and efficacy of LBPP in normal patients, as well as post-operative patients who had no weight-bearing restrictions. It is expected that LBPP will unweight the lower extremities of patients during rehabilitation while facilitating joint motion and cardiovascular exercise. The study will specifically address LBPP in post-operative patients who have restricted weightbearing due to their hip fracture surgery. LBPP should improve the rate and degree of neuromuscular recovery in cases where normal weightbearing must be restricted to protect healing tissues. LBPP should decrease swelling and increase repair success.
