MEDICAL-BEHAVIORAL TREATMENT OF FECAL INCONTINENCE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Purpose: The aim of this study is to refine a medical/behavioral intervention for fecal incontinence previously used in another study. The intent is for nurses to be able to implement this intervention to patients in an assisted living community in a future larger study. We refer to the new program as the FIX treatment program for fecal incontinence Rx . Participants: 30 patients age 18 or older of any gender that have been referred to the UNC GI Motility Laboratory for the evaluation and treatment of fecal incontinence. Procedures (methods): Patients will be instructed by the research nurse on a treatment program that includes both medical and behavioral interventions for fecal incontinence. After following the protocol for 6 weeks, the patients will return to report on their symptoms, give feedback on their satisfaction with the program and report any difficulties with adherence. Follow-up evaluation will be scheduled at 3 months.
