The aim of this proposal is to acquire time-resolved, multi-angle light scattering (MALS) instrumentation for the characterization of nanoparticles and biomolecular assemblies in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at uOttawa. MALS is an essential experimental technique for real-time determination of size, shape, absolute molar mass, and two-body interaction parameters of macromolecules, micelles, biomolecular assemblies, and nanoparticles in solution. Moreover, the time-resolved capabilities of this system will allow for the study of the kinetics of assembly of biomolecules, lipids, and/or nanoparticles into supramolecular complexes. This instrumentation is required for a growing number of interdisciplinary research programs in biology, biophysics, molecular biochemistry, biomaterials, and quantitative biomedicine. The requested MALS from Wyatt Technology is a uniquely versatile and powerful system that can be used to obtain detailed, real-time scattering data for wide variety of biomacromolecules, biomolecular assemblies and nanoparticles in solution. Beyond its important impact on the specific research programs described in this proposal, acquisition of this MALS system will enhance interdisciplinary research and training efforts within the Faculty of Science, the Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Genomics, and the NSERC CREATE training programs in "Quantitative Biomedicine" and "Medicinal Chemistry and Biopharmaceutical Development" at uOttawa.
