Infrared spectrometer for real-time, in situ reaction monitoring

The ability to develop and optimize new chemical processes for application in drug discovery and production, polymer synthesis, and the manufacture of high-value chemicals and materials, requires understanding of reaction mechanism, the detailed sequence of bond-making and bond-breaking events through which a given chemical change occurs. Funding from NSERC will be used to purchase an infrared (IR) spectrometer that enables the real-time, in-line monitoring of novel chemical transformations discovered by our research groups. This instrument will provide a level of insight into the details of reaction pathways that is not available using existing equipment, enabling students and postdoctoral researchers in our groups to develop the next generation of "green", catalytic processes and multicomponent reactions for the preparation of value-added chemical products and new pharmaceutical agents. It will also expose these researchers to a technique that is used extensively in chemical and pharmaceutical R&D and production, providing them with new skills of high value to future employers.
