Assembly and disassembly of cucumber necrosis virus and role of host components

Plant viruses are responsible for economic loss in a variety of crops worldwide. Several measures to reduce the impact of viruses on crop production are in place, however, plant viruses have proven difficult to control. Research in my laboratory aims to understand specific aspects of the multiplication cycle of a plant virus, and the nature of host components that the virus uses for these processes. Toward this aim, it is proposed to analyze how a plant virus particle disassembles in a plant cell and how the newly synthesized components reassemble to form new virus particles. In addition, it is proposed to investigate which host components the virus interacts with in order to assemble and disassemble. Disassembly of a plant virus is essential for the establishment of infection and assembly of new particles allows the virus to spread throughout and between plants. Understanding these essential aspects of the virus infection cycle will contribute to the development of new strategies for controlling virus infection.
