The requested indentation system will provide a unique testing platform that will be the only system to directly measure the measurement of hardness, stiffness, and wear performance of advanced materials, and allow these properties of to be spatially mapped across a component. The new capabilities offered will facilitate measuring these various properties simultaneously for the first time on a fine scale, and open new areas of research regarding microstructure-property correlation. This will support a number of research programs by the applicant and co-applicant involving novel nanostructured composites, light weight alloys, and high strength materials for automotive applications. Without this equipment, these properties can not be correlated to each other directly on one specimen, or compared in different regions of a processed commercial component. This will support the implementation of advanced materials in the automotive, aerospace, microelectronics, and energy industries. A number of new insights will be gained into the inter-relationships between various mechanical properties in these advanced materials, and research will be greatly accelerated by drastically reducing the characterization time. The proposed system will be unique in Ontario, and stimulate new interactions with industry as well as other research institutions.
