To effectively carry out their research projects in colloidal and polymer science, soft matter, microfluidics, and regenerative medicine, a group of researchers from Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal urgently require an analytical tool that can rapidly characterize heterogeneous complex nanosized systems (biomolecules, polymers and nanoparticles) for their the size and concentration. The applicants of this proposal have identified an analytical method for rapid and precise characterization of such systems, namely Electrospray-Differential Mobility Analysis (ES-DMA). The ES-DMA instrument requested in this proposal is able to determine number concentration and size distribution of macromolecules and nanoparticles with molecular weight and size ranging from ~8 kDa to > 100 MDa and from 2.5 to 1000 nm, respectively, within a few minutes. The ES-DMA method has been recently developed and is not currently available to the academic and industrial community in Quebec. A complete and unhindered access of the applicants' group members and the local scientific community at large to ES-DMA will greatly accelerate progress in their research programs by overcoming the size characterization challenge posed by heterogeneous nanosized systems.
