Developing indicators to evaluate the energy efficiency of upgrades and operational changes in water distribution systems

Many water distribution systems in Canada are aging and have a large stock of deteriorated water main assets. Leakage and line losses impose large pumping energy requirements in distribution systems which account for significant electricity costs in the operational budget of Canadian municipalities. Pipe leakage represents an added cost estimated at $160 million/year to Ontario water rate payers and a significant cost in terms of electricity and chemicals to treat, pump, and distribute water that never reaches the customer. Genivar has identified a need to partner with Dr. Yves Filion at Queen's University to develop a set of diagnostic energy indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of water main asset upgrades and operational changes in reducing electricity costs in water distribution systems. This new research partnership will enable Genivar to develop new consulting services to evaluate energy use in distribution systems and will assist Canadian municipalities to identify what capital upgrades and operational changes that will save them millions of dollars in operational costs.
