This Major Resources Support application is for two skilled, expert technicians to assist experiments exploiting the ISAC facility at TRIUMF. We seek to expand an existing MRS that funds one technician. Adding a 2nd technician would help a number of new experiments starting. This grant would enable better access to technical assistance to help a wide variety of existing and potential users of ISAC. The experiments are performed by the co-applicants and a number of experimenters outside of TRIUMF, primarily from Canada, the U.K., the U.S.A., and Israel. The experiments address a wide variety of science including reaction cross-sections, nuclear properties, lifetimes, and asymptotic normalization coefficients needed for nuclear astrophysics; structure of exotic nuclei investigated by reactions and laser spectroscopy; and searches for new interactions and particles in beta decay and atomic parity violation. The present technician provides a number of unique skills needed in a timely fashion for experiments to work. We will also document in the proposal the need for a 2nd technician to help a number of starting experimental programs. The proposed management structure (rotating supervisor chosen from any co-applicant resident at TRIUMF for one academic term or more, and knowledge of the facility coordinators-- who know what experiments are coming-- that the technicians exist) would make sure that outside users are aware of the potential help.
