The dynamics of biologically active small molecules during algal blooms in polar environments

The oceans cover our planet and are filled with microbial life. Yet, these organisms and their complex interactions are largely unknown. This research proposal focuses on elucidating the natural chemistry of bacterial-algal interactions and to explore how they influence marine communities and the earth's climate. Specifically, the aims of this proposal are to: 1. Identify bacteria and eukaryotes that consume the climatically important algal metabolite, dimethylsulfonproprionate (DMSP), in polar waters and the influence community composition has on the fate of DMSP 2. Isolate and quantify novel sulfur containing algaecides during algal blooms 3. Determine the role these sulfur containing bioactive molecules and warming ocean waters play in causing algal populations to bloom and collapse.
