The research initiative entitled DREAMs (enhancing Driver inteRaction with digital mEdiA through cognitive Monitoring) aims to develop an advanced human-computer interaction system that: (a) provides pro-active and seamless support in daily life situations, (b) utilizes smart sensors, multi-modality, and data aggregation to enable services that enhance technology usage, and (c) models user behavior, detects changes in context and adapts accordingly to achieve pro-activeness. This project was motivated by a number of user-case scenarios developed by the industrial collaborators which were presented as key research problems to the applicants. A principal application within this initiative is the development of a novel driver evaluation and monitoring system which: a) continuously observes the driver's attention and cognitive state, b) provides real time adjustments, and c) enhances the overall driving experience by regulating media integration and in-car connectivity while enhancing driver safety. The proposal addresses key technical challenges within the context of the Information and Communications Technologies target area. The anticipated results are expected to provide a significant boost to the Canadian digital media and information communications technology (ICT) industries and create a positive impact to Canadian economy and society.
