The project aims to develop the next generation of consumer ac-dc power supply products (practical intellectual property (IP) and beta prototypes), to be used in virtually all electronic devices today, including desktop and portable computers, TVs, gaming systems, LED and CFL lighting and smartphones. The resulting ac-dc power supply solutions will be physically smaller, lighter and have higher power processing efficiency compared to state-of-the-art solutions. As a result, the portability of the electronic devices will be improved (crucial for notebooks, tablets and smartphones), ecological footprint of the power supply decreased and the surface temperature decreased (improved safety and portability).
Increasing the power density of the conventional solutions has proven to be a challenging task due to conflicting design requirements. In addition, due to an unprecedented and asymmetrical miniaturization of the electronic devices (with respect to the power supplies) a growing need for more compact ac-dc power supplies has emerged. The need for compact power supplies has created an opportunity for new solutions to gain market share, which we wish to capitalize on with at least two times smaller and lighter ac-dc power supplies.
The best-in-class products arising from the proposed project will form the backbone of future commercialization efforts, which will include start-ups and licensing agreements.
