A market study will be conducted to assess the viability of commercializing a novel method called GenericPred for epileptic seizure prediction. GenericPred is a mathematical algorithm for time series prediction and is applicable to a variety of fields including medicine, computer science, environmental science and economics. GenericPred has the advantage of being highly adaptable, consistent and computationally efficient. In one potential application, this novel method is used to predict the likely onset of epileptic seizures. Epilepsy afflicts 1 in 100 Canadians and nearly 1% of the global population. Electroencephalogram (EEG) readings record the electrical activity in the brain using flat discs called electrodes that are attached to a person's scalp. When the GenericPred method is applied to continuous EEG data, it can accurately predict when an epileptic seizure will occur. This novel method was evaluated by applying it to pre-recorded EEG data from 21 epileptic patients; the GenericPred method attained an accuracy level with 100% sensitivity and specificity for the prediction of epileptic seizures up to 17 minutes in advance. This method may have the potential to be incorporated as part of a health monitoring or warning system to provide an advance indication of other types of serious health events, such as heart attack and stroke.
The ability to predict the onset of a seizure allows for epileptic patients to prepare accordingly to maximize their safety. Devices designed to warn patients of an approaching seizure allows patients to avoid potentially dangerous activities and works toward achieving an enhanced sense of normalcy in their lives. According to a Global Business Intelligence (GBI) Research report, the epilepsy therapeutics market value in eight major countries (United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Japan) is expected to grow from $3.4 billion in 2012 to $4.5 billion by 2019. This technology offers a potential innovative solution to assist those suffering from epilepsy to more effectively manage their seizures and to increase Canada's presence in the epileptic therapeutic market.
