The increasing use of renewable energy technologies and the high cost of electricity associated with peak consumption, prompts the need for re-evaluating how energy is used in buildings. Utilities and consumers alike are currently considering technologies which draw and store energy during off-peak hours, or load shift, to overcome mismatches between renewable energy generation and consumption. With the influx of renewable energy sources coming online in recent years, each generating energy according to seasonal and environmental patterns, utilities require storage strategies to ensure efficient operation of the electrical grid. These technologies also assist in peak-shaving by reducing energy demand during periods when demand is traditionally high. Dimplex North America, in conjunction with New Brunswick Power (NB Power), have implemented a pilot program which involved the installation and monitoring of 300 Electric Thermal Storage (ETS) heaters in residences throughout the province. These heaters, which replace conventional electric baseboard heaters, allow NB Power to store thermal energy for the purpose of load shifting. The heaters draw and store energy at off-peak times to supply on-peak demand. Dimplex would like to evaluate the performance of the ETS units, and determine the impact on the utility and the consumer.
