Recent progress in understanding the complex molecular mechanisms of cells behavior has led to the development of novel technologies that have improved the overall quality of our life. This has been made possible by studying multiple aspects that determine a single biological phenomenon. The introduction of a state-of-the-art cell imaging multimode microplate reader will allow eight researchers of the University of Guelph to accelerate their studies and facilitate the development of life-changing biomedical technologies to enhance our health and the safety of our food. This instrument will be located in and managed by the University of Guelph's BioNano Laboratory of the School of Engineering, where it will be critical to support the investigation of pathogenic bacterial biofilms and development of biosensing assays. This indispensable tool will operate at maximum capacity for many years, supporting the research programs of several biological engineering researchers and also faculty members across 3 departments of the Ontario Veterinary College, Ontario Agricultural College and the College of Biological Science. The requested multimode microplate reader will not only replace the 10 year old equipment currently in the BioNano Laboratory, but will also add extra capabilities (i.e., automated digital microscopy, collection of fluorescence intensity, luminescence, fluorescence polarization, time-resolved fluorescence, bio-luminescence resonance energy transfer - BRET, TR-Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer - TR-FRET) to analyse cells under physiological conditions while offering the possibility to perform a variety of tests with only a single equipment instead of purchasing three different instruments. Training programs offered to students and technical personnel will maximize the return of this investment by significantly enhancing graduate research and education, and also by attracting new collaborations.
