Re-engineering of the Design Process of Automated Industrial Machinery through Multi-domain Hierarchical Optimization and Controller Performance

Typical industrial machines are complex and multi-domain dynamic systems. No single "best" approach exists for their design. Building on the existing knowledge, and the past research and experience in machinery development of the applicant and his trainees, the proposed research will make significant original contributions in the development of systematic procedures for the design of automated industrial machinery. Emphasizing the design optimization of multi-domain engineering systems, the developed methodologies will particularly target performance improvements with respect to their production, operation, and control performance. The research outcomes will be implemented in a prototype industrial machine in the applicant's laboratory and rigorously evaluated for further refinement and transfer to Canadian industry.
