A key component in demonstrating the safety of a deep geologically isolated repositories (Deep Geologic Repositories: DGR) is the demonstration that microorganisms indigenous to the geologic system do not pose a concern to the integrity of the repository and thus to the local environment, including groundwater and surface-based ecosystems. Recent research demonstrates that microbial life inhabits the Earth's lithosphere to a far greater extent than was previously thought. While these organisms may be present in situ at very low abundances and/or in sessile or sporulated states, changing conditions over time could result in stimulation of in situ microbial activity. In order to predict and manage the potential for such impacts during planning and construction of a Canadian DGR, it is necessary to develop methods that can detect and identify microorganisms living within geologic systems with the greatest possible sensitivity.
