High strength steels form the backbone of infrastructure in Canadian economy. Two mechanical properties important for their application are strength and ductility. In recent years, there have been significant interest in improving these properties via addition on manganese (Mn), leading to the so-called twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels. International steel companies such as POSCO have developed and manufactured high Mn steels with excellent formability characteristics; however their manufacturing process is very expensive. To overcome this, Hatch Ltd., a Canadian company, has developed new processes for cost-effective production of high-Mn steel (~17 wt% Mn) and intermediate-Mn steel (~6 wt% Mn), pending US patents.
