Regulation of tau phosphorylation and splicing during post-embryonic development

Tau is a protein that helps maintain the skeleton of the neurons in good working order. It does that by binding and straightening the scaffolds that constitute the backbone of the neuronal extensions called axons. This ability is regulated by changes in tau protein internal structure and external surface. Both changes are regulated during development and have an impact in adulthood. We have made the exciting discovery that temperature is a powerful regulator of tau during post-embryonic development and we expect that it has an impact in adulthood. The purpose of this proposal is therefore to examine the mechanisms, and the functional and behavioral consequences underlying the regulation of tau by temperature.
