La mine Canadian Malartic considère relancer l'exploitation de la mine souterraine East-Malartic. Or, lemodèle géologique et l'exploitation de l'époque ont été conçus pour ne soutirer que les zones à forte teneurlaissant en place les minéralisations à plus faible teneur dont l'extraction est beaucoup plus complexe. Cetteancienne mine présente ainsi des réserves d'or importantes, notamment entre les galeries déjà existantes. Afind'exploiter de manière responsable et rentable ces zones latérales de chantiers qui posent d'importants défistechniques, il est nécessaire de développer de nouvelles méthodes de production et de traitement des minerais.À cette fin, l'entreprise doit déterminer le potentiel de nouvelles technologies, comme la spectroscopie parclaquage laser (SCL), la valorisation des données massives récoltées de la mine existante à l'aide de méthodesstatistiques multivariées et le tri du minerai. Ces technologies ne sont pas ou peu utilisée actuellement enexploitation minière. L'équipe de recherche de l'Université Laval, formée du Prof. C. Duchesne et deuxétudiants aux 2e et 3e cycles, procédera à la fusion des données de la mine provenant de plusieurs sources(forages, géologie, tests géomécaniques, etc.), étudiera la façon d'intégrer la technologie SCL et explorera lepotentiel des outils statistiques multivariées afin de prédire le comportement du minerai lors de son traitement,tout en tenant compte de la précision du tri du minerai. Les outils développés dans le cadre de ce projet seronttransférés au partenaire en appui aux travaux en cours sur la relance de la mine souterraine East-Malartic. Àplus long terme, les résultats contribueront à valoriser des installations minières existantes avec commeconséquences : 1) la vitalité économique de régions ressources par le maintiens de nombreux emplois directs etindirects, 2) la relance d'anciennes exploitations minières, et 3) l'augmentation des bénéfices pour des impactsenvironnementaux constants.
